Artistic Vice
…and we're back.
I had intended to provide an update of probably the best gig I’ve been to this year, The Wave Pictures at the Moon Club Cardiff on the 30th of October. This was the ‘Artistic Vice’ tour and they were billed as doing a Daniel Johnston set, but in actuality they did a mix of their own stuff and his. I’ve almost been pummeled into liking the Wave Pictures by 6Music. They play the band relentlessly but I’ve always had a bit of a problem with David Tattersall voice. I didn’t think I’d seen them at their best at The End of the Road festival, especially as we scuttled off to the Gilded Palace of Sin when it began to rain.
the gig on the 30th things just clicked and I was completely charmed by the band.
The band were funny and engaging. They even did a short Acapella set of three or four songs which really worked and showed what a tight band they are. The Moon can be a weird venue at times, full of coked up Hipsters, but everyone seemed to be there for the band which helped create a great atmosphere.
So yes, should have blogged about the gig shortly after I was there, cause details have already began to retreat into the fog of distant memory, but I’m a complete convert to the band now.
I also saw Bob Mould recently. He played my default gig venue of ‘The Fleece’ in Bristol. For once he was supported by a band worth seeing, ‘The Young Knives’ who I’d seen supporting ‘The Flaming lips’ earlier in the year. Bob mould was great, he had had a heads down, one size fits all approach to all the material so Husker Du songs barrelled into Sugar songs with no visible join. I did rush down the front and go a bit mental when he did ‘Hoover Dam’. Gareth – my gig kemosabe – said that Mr Mould smiled, came down the front and began to play his guitar in my direction. I dunno cause I was shaking my head too much.
A few more gigs lined up this year which is good amongst some general craziness in my life which I look back and laugh about if I wasn’t already laughing.
